Turf Infill Supply on the Central Coast

Could the reason your synthetic lawn is flattening, draining slowly, or holding odour have nothing to do with the turf itself?

Most performance problems homeowners blame on the grass — pile that won’t stand back up, water pooling on the surface, that persistent pet smell — actually trace back to the infill underneath. Wrong product, wrong grade, or infill that’s worn down over time. The turf gets the blame, but the infill is where the problem started.

Infill is the working core of any synthetic grass system. We supply silica sand, zeolite, and specialty performance infill to homeowners and trade buyers across the Central Coast — Gosford, Terrigal, Wyong, The Entrance, Umina Beach, Tuggerah, and surrounds.

Right product, right grade, right quantity. With guidance from people who work with this stuff every day.

What is turf infill?

correctly graded silica sand infill being brushed into synthetic grass pile

Turf infill is the granular material layered between the blades of a synthetic grass system to support pile uprightness, stabilise the surface, aid drainage, and — in the case of specialist products — actively manage pet odour.

  • Keeps blades upright and prevents pile collapse under foot traffic
  • Adds ballast weight to stabilise the turf surface and prevent shifting
  • Contributes to drainage performance across the turf system
  • Protects the turf backing from UV exposure and wear
  • Specialist infill products like zeolite neutralise pet urine odour at the source

We stock silica sand, zeolite, and specialty infill products for retail and trade buyers across the Central Coast — so whatever your project calls for, we can supply it locally.

Why Infill Is the Foundation of Any Synthetic Grass System

Think of infill the way you’d think of soil in a natural lawn. The grass on top might look great, but without the right foundation underneath, it won’t perform or last the way it should.

Infill does four things in a synthetic grass system. It holds blades upright so the surface looks and feels right underfoot. It adds weight to keep the turf anchored and stop it shifting over time. It moves water down through the pile and into the drainage layer beneath. And it protects the turf backing from UV exposure and everyday wear.

Some specialist products go further — managing surface temperature or neutralising pet odour at the source.

The right infill also depends on the application. A pet area, a front yard, and a sports surface all have different needs — and getting that match right makes a real difference.

Why Correctly Graded Silica Sand Matters

Not all sand is the same, and using the wrong type causes real problems. Builder’s sand and beach sand are angular and fine — they compact under foot traffic, hold moisture, block drainage, and create hygiene issues over time. Correctly graded silica sand is washed, rounded, and sized specifically for synthetic grass. It settles between the blades without compacting, keeps water moving freely through the pile, and stays clean and stable over time. When you’re buying silica sand infill, the grade matters as much as the product itself.

How Silica Sand Is Applied During Installation

Silica sand is spread across the turf surface and worked down into the pile using a broom or power brush. For most residential turf with a pile height of 25–30mm, you’ll need around 4–6 kg per square metre. Longer pile heights in the 35–40mm range typically need 6–8 kg per square metre to fill the pile properly. The sand is distributed in passes — spreading evenly, brushing in, and repeating until the full application rate is reached and the blades are standing upright through the infill layer.

For DIY installers, getting the application rate right before you order saves a second trip. For trade buyers, we can confirm quantities based on your pile spec before you commit to an order.

Zeolite Infill — Purpose-Built for Pet Turf

How Zeolite Neutralises Pet Odour: Zeolite is a porous mineral that absorbs ammonia — the compound in pet urine that causes odour — directly at the source. It doesn’t mask the smell. It pulls it in and holds it at the infill layer, where the problem actually starts.

Using Zeolite as a Standalone or Blended Infill: In dedicated pet areas, zeolite works as the primary infill at 2–4 kg per square metre. In mixed-use lawns, it blends with silica sand at 1–2 kg per square metre. Note that pet-grade zeolite specified for synthetic grass is required — not generic horticultural zeolite.

Refreshing Zeolite Over Time: Zeolite fills up over time and needs refreshing to keep working. When odour returns despite regular cleaning, it’s time for a top-up. We stock zeolite for orders of any size, making it easy to maintain pet turf performance year-round.

    Specialty and Performance Infill Products

Silica sand and zeolite cover the majority of residential applications, but some projects call for something more specific. For sports surfaces, soft fall areas, high-sun lawns, or buyers looking for a more sustainable option, there are performance infill products designed for those exact situations. We can advise on the right product for any application that falls outside the standard residential brief.

Topping Up Infill in an Existing Synthetic Lawn

Infill depletion is normal. Foot traffic, rainfall, and pet activity all shift infill around over time — moving it toward edges, washing it through the drainage layer, or compressing it below the point where it’s doing its job.

Signs that your lawn needs a top-up:

    • Blades lying flat and not recovering after foot traffic
    • Surface feeling hard or uneven underfoot
    • Drainage slowing noticeably after rain
    • Visible infill thinning in high-traffic zones

When you spot these signs, assess the affected area, work out the quantity you need, and order the correct product to match what’s already in the lawn where possible. Mixing incompatible infill types can cause drainage and compaction issues.

We supply top-up infill orders of any size across the Central Coast.

Infill Application Rates and Quantity Guide

Ordering the right quantity matters. Under-order and you’re waiting on a second delivery. Over-order and you’re paying for product you don’t need. Before you get in touch, this guide will help you work out what you need.

    Silica Sand25–30mm4–6 kg/m²
    Silica Sand35–40mm6–8 kg/m²
    Zeolite (standalone)All heights2–4 kg/m²

    Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how the lawn is being used. For a standard residential lawn, correctly graded silica sand is the right choice. For pet areas, zeolite is what you need — either on its own or blended with silica sand. We’ll help you work out the right product before you order.

Silica sand typically runs at 4–6 kg per square metre for shorter pile and 6–8 kg for longer pile. Zeolite used on its own runs at 2–4 kg per square metre. If you give us your area size and pile height, we’ll calculate the exact quantity for you.

We’d strongly advise against it. Beach sand and builder’s sand are fine and angular — they compact under foot traffic, hold moisture, and block drainage over time. Correctly graded silica sand is washed and rounded specifically for synthetic grass systems.

The signs are pretty easy to spot. Blades lying flat and not recovering, a surface that feels hard or uneven underfoot, drainage slowing after rain, or visible thinning in high-traffic areas. Any of these point to depleted infill that needs refreshing.

Yes. Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral and is safe for pets and people. It works by absorbing ammonia from pet urine at the infill level — no chemicals, no fragrances, just the mineral doing its job.

No. Horticultural zeolite is a different grade and won’t perform the same way inside a synthetic grass system. You need pet-grade zeolite specified for turf applications. We only stock the correct product for this purpose.

It varies depending on how much pet activity the lawn sees. When odour starts returning despite regular cleaning, that’s the signal that the zeolite has reached its absorption capacity and needs refreshing. We supply top-up orders of any size so you can stay on top of it as needed.
